About me!

I am currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Sociology at the CUNY Graduate Center. My dissertation project is inspired by my own upbringing. I was born and raised in Queens, New York in a large Guyanese household. I grew up in a multi-generational household with a strong connection to my Guyanese culture. At times, I admittedly rejected some of the things I learned, which pushed me to want to be more “American” by studying away from New York. Little did I know, my journey of trying to separate myself from my cultural background would actually propel me to understand my people in a different way. This project is as personal for me as it is academic–mixing the two can be confusing and complicated, but I am embracing the journey.
